Ribs? When someone says ribs, I usually think slow-cooked, meat falling-off-the-bones, smoky and rich BBQ flavor. Lately, though, when someone says ribs I think of blasting clappers past a goalie. Not getting the connection? RIBCOR – it’s the name of a Reebok stick the Reebok Ribcor, it has ribs and it will make net minders feel like the proverbial naked goalie!

Think of how a slingshot works. You put the ammo in the pocket, tighten the slack in the bands and start to draw back. The further you pull back, the more power you will provide to the projectile. Now think of those slow-motion videos or still shots that you’ve seen of a player taking a slap shot with the stick fully flexed. At that exact moment, there are hundreds of strands of carbon fibers all stretched and loaded ready to release their energy on that puck. Similar to the slingshot, those fibers were not necessarily in tension while the stick was at rest. With the RIBCOR stick, the structural ribs in the taper takes the slack out of those carbon fibers and even has them in the early stages of tension.

That means that since the loading of the stick is already part way there before you even begin to lean into it, it requires less effort to fully load. That’s what makes this stick so fun to shoot – and it’s probably the main cause of the recent increase in TGS – Traumatized Goalie Syndrome. Check out this funny hockey video:

In all seriousness though, we spoke to part of the engineering team that worked on the development of this stick and they showed us how this stick loads differently than others. We saw tests that showed imagery, like the ones that I referenced above, of a player taking shots with sticks of similar flex but various different taper configurations. The images showed that the RIBCOR loads deeper or allows the puck to come further back, which draws a parallel to pulling really far back on the pocket of a slingshot. We weren’t satisfied with high speed imagery and graphs though, we wanted to know what the reaction was from some of the pro players that were among the first to use this stick. There were no haters among them, in fact, they loved the stick. Take a close look at some NHL action shots and you’ll find a pretty significant number of players using it.

There’s a lot more to this stick than ribs, and I’m not talking about mashed potatoes either. It has legit performance-enhancing technology. To learn more about the RIBCOR stick, check it out here.
